Do you stretch? Why? Well, I have never really thought about it much. However recently I have noticed that if I exercise and don’t stretch after, the post workout soreness is twice harder than if I stretch straight after my work out. However I have never really stretched before. Apparently you should do!
Did you know that arterial stiffness is often a precursor to high blood pressure and heart disease? Well, many people especially after 40 often slow down or stop exercising at all not only stretching which increases their rigidness in muscles and worsens stiff arteries.
This is not it. Many different studies fund out that poor flexibility can led (or be a result of) to high blood sugar, which increases diabetes risk, as well as greater risk for metabolic syndrome. This is another risk factor for heart disease. Not a very happy picture, isn’t it?!
In addition to all the sad facts, stretching can improve flexibility which in fact can prevent an injury. Apparently a flexible muscle can handle shock better. In the situation where people often get pulled muscles, flexible muscle protects itself from the damage. Additionally, flexible muscles can perform better range of motions. Finally, stretching is the relaxation moment after a hard work out. It feels goooooood!
Well, I am not used to stretching even after a work out; however trying to always leave couple of minutes for a nice stretch nowadays. It feels awesome so why not! We always have an urge to stretch when sitting for too long or lying down uncomfortable so why not to stretch after exercising.
